A family worth getting to know

T. rex tends to take the spotlight. The 2023 Tyrannosaurs: Meet the Family exhibition at San Antonio’s Witte Museum widened the frame, bringing together fossil specimens, skeletal casts, and feathered models. Created by the Australian Museum, it invited visitors to explore a much larger collection of relatives.

The scale of a skeleton

One centerpiece was a cast of Scotty, the Tyrannosaurus rex from Saskatchewan. A cast is a reproduction: it lets us study the shape and arrangement of a skeleton without mistaking the display for the original fossil.

Look closer, then look again

Try following the line from the skull through the backbone to the tail. Then compare the arms, legs, and skull proportions with a smaller mount nearby. Start with what you can observe, and use the specimen labels to investigate the differences. The best museum visits leave you with another question.

From the field archive

Our upcoming video looks back at the 2023 visit. The Witte presentation ran from May 24 to September 4, 2023; this is a look back at that exhibition. Our accompanying museum episode is in production.
